March Show!
The Dark Room: Welcome Obscura will be a show of Roger Ralston, Lisa Nappa, and Chris Tillia. We are constructing a dark room (camera obscura) to investigate the use of lenses and projections onto a wall in the gallery. We are using the street outside the gallery as the image we are capturing.
We are also installing a large ceramic and glass work as Lisa keeps following her investigation of the river, and the water of our region.
Chris seems to be working on chemicals, by casting, cutting, and working on non-crystalline solids.

Recession Adds New Meaning to 'Struggling Artist'

New York's artists have always lived in a state of flux. Up-and-coming artists from around the world have seen New York as the ultimate destination spot. Once here, they often have been urban pioneers -- establishing creative enclaves in what had been derelict and industrial neighborhoods. Then the artists often lost their homes and studios as those areas became playgrounds for hungry developers.

The current economic climate has only exacerbated the artists' struggle, forcing them to reevaluate their options. As galleries close and art nonprofits suffer from cutbacks in funding and the loss of support from private institutions, artists must look for new outlets and resources in order to sustain themselves. Many have discovered alternative channels for showcasing their work and staying afloat financially.

At Last, Artists Harness the Internet

PARIS — In an era when even kitchen appliances connect to the Internet, and cellphones have more memory and data processing power than a 10-year-old PC, artists are engaging ever more creatively with computers — or maybe vice versa.

As with video art in the 1960s and early digital work in the ’80s and ’90s, technological progress is providing not only an array of new tools for artistic creation, but also new sources of reflection and new subjects for social commentary. Out of it is emerging a new aesthetic inspired by YouTube and Google.

A global movement is hacking, subverting and critiquing the hardware, software, content, visuals — even the philosophy of the wired world.
